Bayard Cutting Arboretum Harvest Festival

Bayard Cutting Arboretum is an old estate in eastern Long Island, a manor as the Manhattan family used to call its country house. The large estate was located right across the river from the Vanderbilt one that was considered by them ostentatious but more or less the same old money of the wealthy families of the Gilded Age. Nowadays the Vanderbilt estate houses the Dowling College.

Connetquot River, East Islip, Long Island

Connetquot River skirts the estate for another mile flowing for about 3 miles with the ocean tide down into the bay. Mrs. Olivia James, the wife of Mr. William Bayard Cutting donated the property to the state with the intent “to provide an oasis of beauty and quiet for the pleasure, rest and refreshment of those who delight in outdoor beauty; and to bring about a greater appreciation and understanding of the value and importance of informal planting.”  Interesting and appreciative thinking…
