Larnaka, Cyprus

29 Dec

Cyprus‘ location made history. The surrounding empires and kingdoms bumped somehow on this island adding layers of civilization like in few places in the world. Ancient city states were conquered by Achaeans, Phoenicians, Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, crusaders, Frankish, Genoans, Venetians, Ottomans, Brits till they finally got their independence just to be be divided by Turkish forces that occupy the northern part of the island. Quite a cocktails of conquerors bringing their flavor of cultures, each of them leaving an imprint on the island. Larnaca, once the city state of Kition, is a major port once commanding the sea trade after the famous and larger port in Famagusta was destroyed by Persians and further earthquakes. Now the once famous port is used mainly by sun starved Brits and Russians coming with no conquering intentions but with mostly desired Euros in a country that went also through its financial turmoil.
