Monterey, CA

Till 1846, after the US-Mexican war, when the US flag was raised on its custom house, Monterey was the capital of Alta California and the only port for both Spain and Mexico for taxable goods that entered California. The city was established 167 years after its coast and bay was mapped by the expedition of Sebastian Vizcaino. The more recent history is probably better known from John Steinbeck’s famous novel “Cannery Row” whose action happens in a part of the town that at the time was the sardine capital of the world. The smelliest street where the sardines were canned was revamped in a major tourist attraction with statues of the writer and some characters from the book, including the founders of the industry that brought prosperity to the area.
